Before visiting the CHAGALL exhibition at the Jewish Museum in St Kilda I had not thought I'd be seeing such a large and impressive collection of Chagall's work. I was wrong!

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was amongst the greatest artists of the twentieth century and he was prolific as demonstrated by this exhibition.

Fitting for the period in which he lived when it was not uncommon for bohemian artists to decorate their surroundings. So curator and art historian, Jade Niklai has transformed the Jewish Museum into a Chagall-inspired dreamscape that includes not only Chagall's original works and poems but rooms afloat with colourful curtains, demarcating the periods of Chagall's life.

Even the walls bloom with flowers around you so with the dramatic curtains it feels as if you are submerged in Chagall's amazing world.

Gallery design by Anna Tregloan draws on the artist’s love of the theatre – the curtained entrances between rooms add drama and theatre.

The first section draws on Chagall's folkloric Russian to explore themes around language, literature and the Bible

There is a brilliant section on Chagall's time with the Parisian avant-garde, of fauvist, cubist, and expressionist styles, and of his lasting influence on the artwork many positing hi alongside artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Monet in terms of influence.

The exhibition includes a reproduction of Chagall's ceiling design for the Paris Opera House – Palais Garnier ceiling design, 1964, projected on one of the gallery walls. Completed on 250 square metre canvases, it represents 12 scenes from Chagall’s favourite operas and landmarks in Paris and Russia.

Presently showing at the Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne, the exhibition CHAGALL tells the story of the artist’s creative journey through text, printmaking and his larger-scale operatic works and stained-glass window installations.

The exhibition is the product of all kinds of collaborations including the NGV. And includes a never-before-seen Chagall in Australia the painting Mother and Child.
