Celebrating the beautiful darkness, winter solstice at CERES honours the longest night of the year - the winter solstice.

The winter solstice is the day of the year that has the least daylight hours of any in the year. This usually occurs around 22nd June, but can occur between 21st and 23rd June.

This year, the winter solstice occurs on Thursday, 21st June, 2018 at 8:07 pm AET. On this day, the sun will rise at 7.21 am and set at 5.12 pm. This will give us just 9 hours and 51 minutes of daylight!

The winter solstice event will be held on Saturday 23rd June from 4.30 pm until 8.30 pm. At this event, you can warm your hands by the fire, sip on some mulled wine and feast on locally made winter warming food.

There will be the following entertainment on the night:

  • Fire performances
  • Live music
  • Lantern making for children
  • All ending in a spectacular fire finale

  • The event will be held at CERES Environment Park, The Village Green & Village Pavilion, corner of Roberts and Stewart Streets, East Brunswick.

Parking is available onsite at CERES and at the Cretan Brotherhood carpark (on Stewart Street), but please note that spaces are limited. You can also get there by catching the number 96 tram and the 508 bus.

    Food and drinks
You will be able to buy mulled wine and cider, as well as homemade soup by The Merri Table.

The Merri Table is CERES' own organic cafe and is one of the most popular attractions in their community. Here they will provide a friendly dining experience. They cater for all tastes and dietary requirements, with many vegan and gluten-free options.

All profits from here go back to support the CERES programmes for the community. You will also be able to get chai, food, and other drinks.

There will be available a feast plate and world-famous chai by Tamil Feasts, as well as sweet and savoury crepes from Naughty Frenchy - Crepes Revolution. Naughty Frenchy are a sibling duo who are "flippin' Crêpes" on the streets and at festivals for sweet and savoury crepe lovers.

    Cost
    Cost for this event is:
    Adult - $20.00
    Child (3 to 12 years) - $5 (under 3 years free)
    Family (2 adults and 2 children) - $45

Ticket price includes live music, performances, craft activity and a ceremonial fire.

You can get your tickets at this website.

    About CERES
CERES stands for Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies. They are an award-winning not-for-profit, sustainability centre located on 4.5 hectares on the Merri Creek in East Brunswick. They are a community business who put on the following, amongst other things:

  • Extensive environmental education programmes
  • Urban agriculture projects
  • Green technology demonstrations
  • A number of social enterprises including a market, grocery, cafe, community kitchen, organic online supermarket and a permaculture and bush-food nursery

  • CERES began when a small group of people got together in 1982 with a vision of "transforming and reclaiming" a degraded piece of land.

This, in turn, led them to believe in the power of community.

CERES will be putting on this winter solstice event for you, so make sure you and your whole family and friends attend this fun event!
