CERES Environment Park is an award-winning not-for-profit environment and education centre at the corner of Roberts and Steward Streets, Brunswick East. You may be surprised to know that outside of their wonderful complete urban farmer courses, therapeutic horticultural programs, small space gardening courses and all learnings to do with the environment, it's also where you'll find a plethora of workshops that are relaxing, educational, and if you wish it, could lead to a career. You can spend a day learning a new skill or take a multi-week course that might just change the course of your life. With 70+ topics spanning gardening, cooking, craft, nature connection, teaching and more – there’s something for you. Check out the Adult Learning Program for all available workshops.

Just concentrating on July 2024, you can enjoy learning to Cook Mexican; Food for Mind and Gut; Sourdough Bread Baking; and vegan cheese-making for the foodies. 1) Under trainer Juanita's guidance you'll learn to work with fresh seasonal ingredients, traditional spices and ancient grains to create authentic Mexican meals. 2) Trainer Melanie Leeson will share her knowledge of foods that can help you to build and protect your gut microbiome and clear brain fog. Learn to also incorporate brain-powering foods easily into your daily diet. It's all about the microbiome as we are learning. 3) Who doesn't want to smell the fragrance of fresh sourdough bread coming out of their kitchen! Make a variety of different breads and enjoy some of your very own handmade pizza for lunch. 4) Learn the skills and knowledge to create your own array of vegan cheeses, milk, creamy spreads, and dairy-free desserts.

If you're feeling a little crafty, there's Basketry; Macrame Plant Hangers; Crochet for Beginners; Soap Making for Beginners; and Soy Candle Making. 1) Turning plant fibres into a functional and attractive basket is not only immensely satisfying but it nurtures our connections with the land, through intuitive natural fibre handling knowledge, and with time, to one of the oldest known crafts in the history of human civilisation. 2) Macrame is so reminiscent of the 70s but they've come a long way - lending themselves to jewellery for adornment. However, this is your hands-on macrame plant hanger workshop that'll beautify all your hanging plants, and more. 3) Crocheting granny squares have also taken on a new hue with young ones creating some very modern jackets with granny squares. Come along to learn all the basic stitches to make your own crochet blanket, or where ever your creativity and imagination take you. 4) Soap making can also be highly satisfying and you can make your very own high quality natural soap. 5) Learn to blend your own fragrance, and learn about wax and wick sizes. It's candle care 101 and the techniques behind melting, mixing and pouring your own soy candle.

If your garden is the love of your life and offers you peace of mind, there's Pruning and Care of Fruit Trees; a Therapeutic Horticulture Program; a Complete Uban Farmer Program; and on the other end of the scale, Small Space Gardening; and Mushroom Growing. If you love what you have in your garden, you need to learn to take care of it. 1) Horticulturist and permaculturist Justin Calverley focuses on the pruning and care of fruit trees to discover how a variety of fruit and nut trees in your backyard can produce a bountiful harvest year every growing season. 2) The Therapeutic Horticulture Groups are for a maximum of 8 participants and led by a facilitator experienced in delivering therapeutic horticulture activities designed to support mental health and wellbeing in a community setting. 3) The Complete Urban Farmer combines 14 sessions, giving you the skills and knowledge to apply to your own urban patch or help you decide if a career in horticulture/permaculture is for you. 4) Use containers and pots and vertical space where you can transform a balcony, courtyard, patio or windowsill into a hugely productive small space garden. 5) A hands-on introductory workshop to learn to Grow Mushrooms. Learn the secrets to successfully growing oyster mushrooms (my favourite) at home.

This is just July, and CERES has a whole year of workshops mapped out, so be sure to check out their website with lots more exciting activities like Car Club for Women and Non-Binary Folk; Backyard Beekeeping basics; Tomato Growing; Edible Weeds; Gardening with Indigenous Plants; Traditional Wooden Spoon Carving; Seed Saving and Propagation; The Herbal Apprentice, and a whole lot more mind-blowing events that will expand and enthral your hippocampus. Stay in touch with CERES via their website and Facebook page.
