A Farm in the City - CERES

Home > Melbourne >
Published June 5th 2009
Connect with your inner urban farmer at CERES, Melbourne's community environment park along the Merri Creek in Brunswick East: 4.5 hectares of greenery dedicated to sustainability, organic gardening and laid-back, happy hippie living.

CERES' grounds are free to wander and provide a refreshing vision of a different way of life in the city. Just a short walk from the buzz of Lygon Street, visitors will find a chook yard, community garden allotments, cafe and even a sweat lodge nestled in the CERES village. The atmosphere is easy-going and inspiring – see how Melburnians are taking steps to live more sustainably without making drastic changes to their lifestyles.

If you're the type that gets a virtuous lift from using green bags for your groceries, then CERES' organic market, held 9am - 5pm 7 days a week, will have the environment gods showering gold stars on you like a much-needed Melbourne downpour. The market offers live music, crafts, locally produced organic veggies and baked goods. If you're up for a walk, take an easy 2.5 km stroll north along the Merri Creek trail and visit the Harding Street Market Garden, where CERES gardeners and volunteers work the land.

For those yearning to get their hands dirty, CERES runs weekend workshops on urban farming, canning and preserving, cooking and crafting. Workshop prices vary, but range from $30 to more than $100. Concession and member prices are slightly lower. A schedule and description of workshops is available here.
