Central West Shopping Centre has joined forces with Maribyrnong City Council and VicHealth to encourage locals to create healthier habits. Hence the launch and birth of Mari Feeds, which are meal boxes packed with fresh produce from the Centre's retailers. They are designed to reimagine health in the community and the aim is for the boxes to be delivered to 300 households across Braybrook, Maidstone and West Footscray over 3 months.
Running from 27 April to 29 June 2021 (see full details here), it's envisaged that 3600 meals laden with fresh fruit and vegetables will be provided and made available to the entire community. Recognising how difficult it was for many in the community over 2020, this project will offer a more affordable solution to eating healthy. There will be 3 tiers of meal boxes. 1) a free box provided to families in need to help them get through this difficult time; 2) a reduced-cost meal box for any members of the community with a health care or concession card and 3) a full-priced box for those who have the means to 'pay it forward' to assist in partially funding the lower-cost boxes for other members of the community to receive. Paying it forward and putting a meal on the table for disadvantaged families while helping to shape healthy habits is the heart of the project.
Each box will come with enough fresh produce for 3 meals, each feeding a family of four. Recipe cards for the meals of the week will be included within each meal box to make it easy to follow and to create perfect portions using the included ingredients. Bookings will be open 9 days prior to the delivery date each week, with final bookings closing five days prior to delivery.Bookings are accepted for all three tiers of the program, encouraging all to sign-up.
