Do you live on the Central Coast and love to read? A new initiative in partnership with Words on the Waves is on its way.

Welcome to Central Coast Reads , a community-wide reading program of book clubs and author talks that hopes to encourage reading, and social and human interaction on the Central Coast, whilst establishing Central Coast as a reader’s region within the cultural map of Australia.

Central Coast Reads encourages people to read the same book and create a larger conversation through book clubs, libraries, author talks, and the Facebook group , and to thinking about the book, literature and themes within the book as well as connecting with the local community for people of all ages. Those keen to participate are encouraged to buy the book from a local bookstore or borrow it from the Central Coast Libraries network, and read it so they can participate in a range of events =, or host their own book club – Central Coast Reads will have support materials for book clubs as well. You can become part of this community for free – with all information at the links above. In addition to this, there is also a seniors program, funded by the NSW Government with a special stream of book clubs, author visits and discussions for seniors.

This initiative will have many benefits for the community as it brings people together to read, talk and grow to encourage community literacy and connection with the starting point of a shared book. Engaging in a local program like this with locals will bring generations of readers together with many other benefits such as prizes, reading notes, and a chance to meet the author of the chosen book.

This campaign was launched in December 2023, and the first book discussion will take place in March. The first two books are below:

The Tea Ladies of St Jude’s Hospital by Joanna Nell
