Question: what do you get when you put a talented local theatre company together with an award-winning script and a popular performance venue? Answer: a professionally produced rock musical which will be showing in the Drama Theatre at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) over a two-week period.
From June 27 to July 12, 2014, CenterStage Geelong- an amateur theatre company which strives to create an ongoing, ethical and sustainable theatre presence in the Geelong region- will be producing their adaptation of the popular show RENT. Musical lovers all over the world have embraced the production since it was first introduced on Broadway in 1996. It has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and several Tony awards (including the coveted award for Best Musical). Now, a locally-based and highly professional cast and crew are set to introduce their own version of this rock musical to an eager Geelong audience.

Set in New York's Lower East Side during the late 1980s or early 1990s, RENT tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling to make it in the big city. These impoverished young artists and musicians go about their days under the shadow of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, yet they still manage to fall in love and attempt to negotiate their dreams under such a negative spotlight. Their persistence to achieve what seems impossible is all the more engaging considering their bohemian lifestyles (which include drug use, homosexuality, relationship woes and other conflicts), and audiences can't help but get caught up in the narrative drama. Songs made popular by the musical, and which will be performed include the powerful 'Seasons of Love', the emotional 'One Song Glory' and the celebratory 'La Vie Bohème', among many more.
GPAC will be hosting CenterStage Geelong's adaptation of the inspiring rock musical RENT
It takes an ambitious cast and crew to adapt a Tony-award winning musical and turn it into a local theatre stage show, but CenterStage Geelong have taken on the challenge. Tickets are $43.90 each (online price) or $42.50 (cash price) and are available from GPAC.
