Eudunda is a small charming town located 110 km north-east of Adelaide on the Thiele Highway via Gawler and Kapunda. In the centre of the town is the multi-award winning Centenary and Memorial Gardens. In recent years, both gardens had extensive redevelopment and were merged.
A memorial walkway serves as an entrance to the Memorial Gardens. In the walkway, there are tiles with names of servicemen and women. The walkway leads to a peaceful circular garden with a beautiful memorial in the centre. There are chairs to sit, reflect and honour those who served in the wars.
Tree-lined walkways and paths lead to the Centenary Gardens where there is a bronze sculpture of author Colin Thiele with "Mr Percival" the pelican, one of the characters in his book,
Storm Boy. Next to the sculpture is an interpretative sign about Colin and his works. Eudunda is Colin's birthplace.
A special feature of the garden is a stone shelter with tiles on the walls made by local people and school children telling stories of transport in the area during the last 100 years. Similar attractive tiles on seats and stones featuring children's artwork telling the history of the region can be seen around the garden. There are even tiles with games to play.
The garden has spacious lush lawns with picnic tables and chairs. There is also a sheltered BBQ area and a fenced playground for children.
There is also a small area called Kid's Scrub, a place where kids can venture into a scrubby area, exploring interesting structures, artworks and paths to follow. This is a project by students of the region.
As the gardens are on land originally leased from S.A. Railways, there is memorabilia of the railway line.
When in Eudunda, do spend some time enjoying and exploring these beautiful gardens which the town is very proud of.
Also opposite the gardens, a short walking distance away, you will find a beautiful silo art. They feature two storybooks, The Ngadjuri storybook and Colin Thiele's book,
Sun on the Stubble. You can read more about the silo art
