Fri 25 Mar 2022 - Sun 27 Mar 2022

There are some areas in Australia, which still exhibit the strong influence of all the cultures who first settled there when our Country was born. One such place is Warwick in Queensland, which is part of the Southern Downs and is rich in Scottish and Irish Heritage from the first white settlers to the area. Warwick is approximately one hundred and fifty-six kilometres from Brisbane or almost two-hours' drive, so it is not far to travel to attend the CelticFest.

CelticFest is being held in Warwick from 25 to 27 March 2022. The main ticketed event will be held on Saturday 26th March at the Warwick Showgrounds. The cost of an adult ticket is $16.91 (includes fee) and Children of school age are $5.00 each. Companion Carers accompanying their clients will get in free but still require a ticket. Early bird sales end 26 March 2022.

If you are thinking of making your visit a long weekend, there are plenty of places to visit or see on Friday 25th March, which are being hosted by local businesses; some of these are ticketed, some are free. If you like listening to Celtic Music, Club Warwick RSL is the place to be, perhaps even enjoy a meal while there. There will also be Heritage Trail Walks and Heritage Drive Trails, which will give you a good understanding of the history of Warwick.

Accommodation in Warwick is plenty and features both modern style and historical significance. On my recent stay in Warwick, I stayed at the Buckaroo Motor Inn , which was exceptionally clean with added touches to make my visit very pleasant.

The Celtic Gathering, the main day of the festival runs all day and into the night with heaps of activities for you to enjoy. These are –

  • Highland Games including the Caber Toss
  • Medieval Village – Vikings, Jacobites, Workshops and more
  • Massed Pip Band – Celtic Parade and mass performances of pipers and drummers
  • Irish and Highland Dancing
  • Gathering of the Clans and Genealogy Experts
  • Celtic Bands, Fiddlers and Choir
  • Celtic Markets and Lost Trades
  • Celtic Animals – Highland Coos' and Clydesdale's
  • ' Rock On' Irish Band into the evening
  • Celtic Inspired Bar

The renowned Outlander Series has stirred our interest to search our genealogy or research the history of the Jacobites and wars in the United Kingdom in medieval times. Genealogy Experts will be present on Saturday to help you in your search.

You will be able to soak up the atmosphere as you walk through the medieval village as if you were transported back to a time in history when markets stalls were a big part of any community. Along with Celtic-themed markets, there will be displays from lost trades such as blacksmithing and authentic Highland Cows to see. Every eat and drink vendor will have at least one Celtic-themed item on their menu, so be adventurous and try them all.

The night's entertainment will be kicked off by the pipe bands, Moreton Celtic Fiddle Group followed by Irish Bands Limerick and The Gathering, which will have everyone up dancing, singing and stomping the ground to the end of an amazing day.

Before leaving for home on Sunday, you may wish to take a visit to Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Centre or take a ride on the Downs Explorer Train to Clifton, which includes lunch at O'Shanleys Irish Bar & Restaurant . I have taken this trip at night and was very impressed by the quality of trains and the beautiful countryside seen from the train's windows heading towards Clifton. The Irish Stew at O'Shanleys was delicious. Perhaps if homeward bound is towards Toowoomba, you could stop for a visit at the Darling Downs Zoo.

Other interesting events being held over the weekend are the CelticFest, there will be a Park Run – Celtic Style, Gaelic Football, visits to Pringle Cottage , Queens Park , a Scottish Country Dance at Junabee Memorial Hall , Scots PGC College Pipe Band Competition and more.

The Gathering will be held at the Warwick Showgrounds, 18 Kingsford Street, Warwick. Tickets must be shown for entry. Even if you do not have Scottish or Irish heritage, this is an event which will stir plenty of emotions and festive fun.
