Celebrating Melbourne Libraries

Celebrating the integral role that the library plays in our city, this interactive exhibition embodies the values of the 'sharing economy' that the library champions by inviting you to contribute to imagining our future library – through building stories, sharing ideas and harnessing the creativity of people.

Libraries have always been places where the human imagination – spanning different times, places and cultures – can be found collected together. Today, a library can take many different forms: we keep personal libraries in our homes; we use digital ones on our computers and take them with us everywhere on our mobile phones. And then, there are public libraries that try to serve the (increasingly) diverse needs of the whole of a society.

Public libraries hold a special place in the collective imagination. As places to meet, converse and belong, Melbourne’s public libraries foster a sense of community and share the civic values of learning, literacy and creativity across all ages, and for everyone.
