Happy Bastille Day

Bastille Day is France's National Day which commemorates the storming of the Bastille by Parisian revolutionaries. Celebrations are held throughout the country on the 14th July. Here are a number of ways to join in the spirit in Brisbane and work on your joie de vivre.

Hold your own party

You could hold your own party with decorations in the traditional blue, red and white. Don your favourite stripy Brenton shirt and invite all your friends over. Serve a picnic with fresh baguettes and delicious cheeses and deli meats from Black Pearl Epicure. You can order your French supermarket supplies from France Gourmet.

Then purchase your pastries and desserts from the French Patisserie in Toowong, some delectable macarons from Monsieur Macaron in Spring Hill, or something traditional from Chouquette in New Farm.

Dining out

If you don't feel like cooking, then make a reservation at one of these great French restaurants or cafes in Brisbane:
Anise, New Farm
Aquitaine Brasserie, South Brisbane
Banneton, Woollongabba or Ashgrove,
C'est Bon, Woolloongabba
Deer Duck Bistro, Auchenflower
E'cco Bisto, Brisbane City
French Martini, South Brisbane
Lutece, Bardon
Montrachet, Paddington
Rhubarb Rhubarb, Wooloowin
Sprout, Auchenflower

If you have ever wanted to learn French then you can join the Alliance Francaise Brisbane. This year they are holding a Bastille Day Gala at the Royal Queensland Golf Club. It will be a glamourous evening celebrating French culture with fine French food and wine, cheese tasting and jazz music.

It was sad to see France miss out on winning the football this year. I hope they don't mind me celebrating their national day with some of their delicious food and garlicky snails. As the French say Mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup.
