Last year, the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra , one of Brisbane's favourite community orchestras, turned 30. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, they were unable to hold their planned concert, so they have rescheduled their birthday Gala Concert this year on Sunday November 7th at 3pm in the iconic Brisbane City Hall.

The program is an exciting one, with the orchestra commissioning a work from Elena Kats-Chernin, one of Australia's most outstanding female composers. Entitled "Bag of Twelve", the work takes inspiration from a handwritten sketch in Beethoven's last sketchbook, 32 bars of an incomplete piano bagatelle. Elena writes "The piece is slightly melancholy. This quality is one of my favourite moods in music in general. I found myself deeply drawn to this short and gentle piece and I decided to create a set of variations on this bagatelle for this commission for the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra." The work employs all of the orchestras musicians and calls for extended instrumentation, including a wide range of percussion instruments, harp and of course, the piano in tribute to Beethoven's original work.

This work sits alongside the exciting Overture to "Colas Breugnon" by Kabalevsky and Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn. These three works are all conducted by the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra's Conductor Laureate, Antoni Bonetti AM.

The second half of the concert will be conducted by incoming Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Paul Dean. Paul is Brisbane based and would be known to many as past principal clarinettist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and founder of Ensemble Q. He will be guiding the orchestra through Brahms' cheery and pastorale Symphony no.2.

Tickets to the concert are available by visiting the Ticket Tailor website . Children's tickets are $20, while adult tickets are $50 for stalls, or $60 for the balcony. The orchestra also has a free ticket companion policy for attendees who hold a government-issued companion card. It is wise to consider parking arrangements as the King George Square carpark is often busy on a Sunday. Arrive in plenty of time, or consider taking conveniently located public transport.
