Celebrate Yellagonga Day, held this Sunday at Neil Hawkins Park, Joondalup, is a fun day out for people of all walks of life to come together in Yellagonga Regional Park.Held from 8 am to 2 pm, enjoy a jam-packed program of music and live performances, fascinating talks and walking tours, kids' entertainment, arts and crafts, free and ticketed workshops and heaps more!
Yellagonga Regional Park is named after the prominent Whadjuk Noongar leader, whose family cared for the land from Derbarl Yerrigan (the Swan River) all the way along the coast to Moore River and Ellenbrook. Aboriginal people have nurtured the land throughout Joondalup and surrounds for thousands of years, sharing knowledge from generation to generation.Don't miss this very special opportunity to join together on country, celebrate cultural diversity and continue the tradition of knowledge-sharing by learning more about the land we live on and making connections with those around us.

The Hive Presented by Go for 2&5, The Hive is an interactive, family-friendly experience combining puppet making with a musical puppetry performance. It explores themes of connection, teamwork, and sustainability. It teaches young people and adults alike the process of pollination and the importance of the hardworking bees coming together as a community for a common goal. Colours, Cockies and Cab Sav (ticketed*) Gather your mates and unleash your inner Ken Done in this fun-filled masterclass to paint Carnaby Cockatoo. Facilitated by the expert teachers from Perth's own Pinot and Picasso classes.Clay Handbuilding Workshop (ticketed*) Create a beautiful mug or vase! Forage the parklands for foliage to decorate your creation and make it truly bespoke.Rag Rug-MakingHistorically rag rugs have been created across many continents and this contemporary technique explores new and traditional themes. At this workshop, you'll commence creating your rug and take home all the skills needed to work on your masterpiece or complete it at your leisure throughout the event. Everything is supplied, although, If you have some fabric or clothing that you can't wait to use for a project, bring it along. Healing India Creative Arts will facilitate the workshops. No experience is required although children will require assistance from an attending adult.Basket WeavingTo inspire your creative sustainability, a range of materials including recycled paper, cardboard, sustainable twines & textiles to repurpose into your basket will be provided at this workshop. Each workshop runs for approximately 30-45 minutes leaving you time to relax and engage in weaving your own mini basket. Throughout the workshop, engage in creating a functional textile, twine, and yarn basket and leave with learning a range of textile up-cycling, repurposing, weaving, and basketry skills that can be applied to future projects should you wish. Healing India Creative Arts will facilitate the workshops. No experience is required although children will require assistance from an attending adult. We can be mindful of our responsibility to care for our world through mindful making. Suitable for all ages and abilities.Screen PrintingTry your hand at this innovative yet simple art form with Kindling Creative . Black-Cockatoo Chatter (FREE)Come and learn about threatened black-cockatoos and their breeding biology, habitat and how you can help them.Storytelling with Olman Walley (FREE)Olman's storytelling offers an introductory experience for all age groups and audiences. Starting with some dreamtime stories, young people and adults alike will get an interactive experience with actions and movements to go with the stories. You will then get to experience a 'show and tell' where we exhibit some artefacts and individually explain the traditional uses of these tools while connecting them to other elements of Noongar culture such as the six seasons.Noongar Culture Talks (FREE)Experience a cultural tour of Lake Joondalup learning about the ways of the Whadjuk Noongar with a focus on plants and animals from Jayden Boundry or Olman Walley who is a direct descendant of Yellagonga himself.Listen to the raucous sounds of Formidable Vegetable (FREE)Formidable Vegetable combine radish beets with horns, ukulele and positive climate action that the whole neighbourhood can get down to. Their songs have inspired people from 5 to 95 to grow their own food, make bubbly ferments and live a better life after being serenaded with irresistibly funky home-scale solutions to the sometimes-overwhelming problems of the world.
Clay Handbuilding with House of Hobby (TICKETED)In this epic workshop, House of Hobby's amazing ceramicists are going to teach you tips and tricks on how to hand-build and craft beautiful ceramic pieces from mugs to plates and everything in between. Following the workshop, your pieces will be bisque fired, clear glazed and glaze fired before being returned for you to collect and treasure within 6-8 weeks.Community Sedge Planting Morning (FREE)Friends of Yellagonga Regional Park invites you to a community planting morning at Celebrate Yellagonga Day from 8.30am - 9.30am to help plant sedges. Meet in the area just south of the jetty at Neil Hawkins Park and be prepared to get dirty (wellies or boots are recommended).Bryan Saunders chats CarpCome learn about carp and other feral fish, the impacts these feral fish have on the Yellagonga wetlands and how you can help from Bryan Saunders of Waters Friends of Beenyup Channel.Turtle Talk with Anthony SantoroCome learn more about the iconic turtles that live in the Yellagonga wetlands and their biology, ecology, behaviour and threats, as well as about the Saving Our Snake-necked Turtle Program.Self-guided Walking TrailLearn more about the local biodiversity of the park and the plants and animals that live there, plus other fascinating information on a self-guided 1.1km walk.Food TrucksGrab something yummy and pull up a patch of grass to look out at the lake - ahh the tranquillity! …and much more!
