It happens once a month wherever you are in the world – the full moon. She's big, she's bold, and she's got quite the reputation. Everything from people falling in love to otherwise sane people losing their minds to riots in the streets are blamed on this monthly celestial event.

Thailand is famed for its full moon parties – all-night affairs held on beaches, and typically attended by travellers. But you won't need to cross the Indian Ocean to enjoy the full splendour of the next juicy lunar appearance.

Melbourne Howlers Full Moon Hash House Harriers
Let's start with a healthy one. The Hash House Harriers are a group of cross-country runners who meet up on the Sunday nearest to each full moon and drive to a location within one hour of Melbourne, and then run through bushland. One person is nominated as the "hare", and their job is to set the run, bring bread and salad, and write about the run the following month. If you're working on your fitness, there's also the option to walk. Find out more here .

Melbourne General Cemetery Full Moon Tour
This is held just a couple of times a year, but it's well worth the wait. Each full moon in April and May, the cemetery hosts full moon tours, taking visitors to pay their respects to some of Melbourne's most notable citizens who now rest in peace. These include Australia's longest serving Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, famed author Marcus C Clarke, explorers Burke and Wills and the man whose ghost is believed to haunt the Princes Theatre, Frederick Baker. Check out their website for upcoming tours.

Public Full Moon Circle
This is an event for pagans or people who are interested in becoming a pagan and taking on their Earth-worshipping philosophies. Once a month, the Pagan Awareness Network Inc hosts this full moon ritual at the Eltham Soccer Ground, Wattletree Road. The event includes creating a protective circle of energy around participants, group energy work, and the sharing of food and drink. For more details on the next circle here .
The Esoteric Bookshop
These guys host full moon events throughout the year from ritual ceremonies, to workshops on spellcasting, to hypnotism to crafting classes on how to make full moon pouches complete with charms and herbs. Their website has a complete listing of their events and workshops.

These are just a handful of events that take place each full moon. With only a bit of investigating, you'll find plenty more on-one events such as full moon feasts, beach parties, meditation nights, and astronomical society open nights. So forget staying at home, it's a marvellous night for a moondance.
