The official national event of Australia Day is observed to respect and celebrate the diversity and achievements of Australian society past and present as well as reflect on past wrongs including towards Indigenous Australians.
In what will be a long weekend,
Australia Day in 2025, falls on Sunday 26 January and the public holiday will be celebrated on Monday, 27 January.
Here are some of the events in Brisbane to recognise the National Day.
Recognise service in the Lord Mayor's Australia Day Awards
The Lord Mayor of Brisbane will be awarding those who "help improve the lives of others and make the Brisbane of tomorrow even better than the Brisbane of today through the Australia Day Awards."
Awards to celebrate the achievements of community members and organisations are presented in eight categories:
Senior Citizen of the Year
Young Citizen of the Year
Australia Day Cultural/Arts Award
Australia Day Sports Award
Corporate Citizen of the Year
Community Event of the Year
Green Heart Award
Australia Day Achievement Awards.
Past winners have included:
George Rowlinson, Citizen of the Year
George Rowlinson is a selfless and dedicated volunteer who has played a pivotal role in running and assisting the Everton Park Scouts Group for several decades and
Jan Kennedy, Senior Citizen of the Year
With 20 years of continuous community volunteering for several groups, Jan is actively involved with the Sherwood Neighbourhood Organisation, the Yeronga Friendship Club Inc. and Tennyson Travellers.

Attend a Citizenship Ceremony
Welcoming new citizens at
Brisbane City Hall Brisbane City Hall is a special Australia Day ceremony to grow a diverse and inclusive community.
To be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship, you must have:
Been an Australian permanent resident for at least 1 year and lived in Australia for at least 9 out of 12 months before you apply
Been lawfully resident in Australia for at least 4 years before you apply
Not been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in the last 4 years before you apply
Good moral character
Listen to the Hottest 100 Countdown
In what has become an Australia Day tradition, Radio Triple J's countdown of the 100 hottest songs of the year is the ultimate music marathon. The countdown is based on public votes and broadcast through
ABC radio . Throw a pool party, grab some friends and try and pick which song will come in at number one.
Eating an Aussie classic and enjoying the outdoors
Beyond these formal events, Australia Day can be a day for backyard barbeques and a friendly family game of cricket, just relaxing at the beach or savouring a classic Aussie culinary sweet like Tim Tams, Iced VoVos, Lamingtons and Pavlovas.
