It is hardly believable that Fed Square at the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets in the heart of the city turns 20 in October, yet it does, because it feels like it's been around forever as Melbourne's gathering place. It's hard to remember a time it wasn't there. For the whole month of October, head over to the Square and celebrate its birthday with activities, world-first commissions, exhibitions and giveaways. Celebrate the history, and let's not forget the architecture and stories since it opened to the public on 26 Oct 2022 with a grand aspiration to create a central public square in the City, on the banks of our beloved Birrarung.
The Square has gone on to conquer the world when it courted controversy and global attention for its distinct design, and has been voted amongst the top 10 public squares in the world. It has been recently recognised as one of the world's youngest heritage-listed buildings. It has certainly been the lifeblood of our city, roosted upon by our multicultural community for many a free event put on by the City of Melbourne for our entertainment. The significance of the site is far longer than 20 years, so come along and look back and reflect upon the Indigenous history of the site as a gathering place for the people of the Kulin Nations, the oldest continuing culture in the world. It's going to be a big party, so don't miss out!
