Farmstays are a wonderful way of reconnecting with all the wonders that Mother Nature has to offer. But if you dread hearing moans of "I'm bored!", fear not, for I have found the perfect farmstay.

Cedar Glen is located in south-east Queensland, next to the scenic Lamington National Park. It is an easy drive from Brisbane or the Gold Coast and makes for the perfect weekend escape. Cedar Glen has its origins in the 1900s, and today, this working cattle farm is still owned by the Stephens family.

You can choose between four original cottages. We stayed at the Stinson Cottage, surrounded by wallabies and horses. From the moment you walked in, it was like you had been warped back in time. Quaint, yet comfortable, this two-bedroom cottage can accommodate up to 6 people. The kitchen is fully equipped, but if you are after a "do-nothing" kind of break, you can opt for the fully catered package which includes breakfast, lunch, dinner – what a bonus for mum and dad!

So, what is there to do on a farmstay? At Cedar Glen, they have it all sorted. Do as much or as little as you like. Our day at the farm:

Morning: Feed the animals, go on an egg hunt, hand milk the cow. There are plenty of animals to tend to, and the limited number of guests on the farm means that everyone gets a really good turn at everything. All the eggs and milk are taken to the kitchen and used in the cooking.

Breakfast in the communal Dining Room: Meet other guests staying at the farm whilst enjoying the lovely free-ranges eggs we collected!

A guided scenic horse ride through the property: Take in the mesmerising beauty and grandeur of the mountains. Much to my relief, the horses were very gentle and calm – perfect for first-time riders. There are several different tracks and options depending on your capability.

Be spoilt with a picnic lunch by the stream: Scrumptious quiche and sandwiches paired with billy tea made using the water straight from the stream!!

Afternoon: Run around with a frisbee or soccer ball. Sit on the verandah and gaze into the mountain ranges whilst enjoying afternoon tea. Feed the horses a carrot or an apple – they will love it! Watch the wallabies chilling out under the trees.

Afternoon animal feeding: Includes chasing the animals back to their pens for the night.

Country style dinner is served, followed by indulgent dessert to finish off!

Retire for the night: Gaze at the star-lit skies, toast some marshmallows or just snuggle down to a good night's rest.

Other activities include learning to throw a boomerang or go on a 4WD tour up the mountains to watch the sunset. The friendly hosts are more than happy to accommodate your plans. Animal feeds are included in the accommodation tariff, all other activities are at an extra cost.

So if you are looking for some quality down-time with the family, try this memorable farmstay. The kids will be talking about it for a long time!
