Tucked within Whiteman Park in the Swan Valley about half an hour's drive from Perth is the .

Having no clear memory of ever having visited when I was growing up in Perth (it was much smaller and located elsewhere), I was looking forward to finally visiting the park in its Whiteman Park location.

As a full day out it's a great one as you have the option of taking in the animals at Caversham then exploring Whiteman Park as well. Everything is included in the Caversham admission price (Whiteman Park entrance is free) except if you want to purchase anything at the kiosk or souvenir shop.

There are plenty of native and non-native reptiles, birds and animals to see, apparently over 2000 of them live here.

You can time your journey through the park seeing all the animals with the live, interactive shows. The Farm Show at 10am, 1pm and 3pm is highly recommended and is done with great humour.

They'll show you how the sheep are rounded up into the pens, how they are shorn, and you may be invited to learn how to crack a whip and swing a billy can for some bush tea. And the kids may get the chance to feed some hungry lambs so a very entertaining show for young and old. Afterwards the presenter is happy to answer questions as you pat the sheep in the pen.

The other show is Meet the Wombat & Friends at 11am, 2pm and 3.45pm, where you can get a photo with a wombat and hear about all the animals on show as you see them up close and speak to the keepers.

Then it's time for the Meet the Koalas enclosure during a morning or afternoon session where you can really get up close to sleepy koalas and maybe even see a baby koala and get another photo in.

There's also Molly's farm to visit to see the farm animals and even see some llamas thrown in amongst other non-traditional farm critters.

All the while the resident kangaroos are always out and about on the grounds so you can feed them with the feed provided as they follow you around, or they'll be lounging in the sun and happy to pose for photos (I guess they're used to it!).

All in all a good day out for locals who haven't been for a while but especially fun for out of towners who want to see Aussie wildlife all in one place and get a few photos with the locals of the animal variety.
