is a unique Brisbane initiative from the team at Connections Catering . Owner and collaborator, Kathryn Kenny, along with her business partner, Cath Doyle, established this year with the aim of "bringing people together over food, conversation and a desire to make a difference."

The team's launch event, I Heart Pie, captured the essence of and was proof that Brisbaneites are indeed all heart.

In a quiet suburban park in Welsby St New Farm, people of all backgrounds sat at a communal table to feast on luscious sweet and savoury pies, and discuss the seldom talked about heartache that is domestic violence.

It would seem that such a heavy topic would burden the picnic vibe, however the two collaborators Kathryn (a social worker and caterer) and Cath (a human services professional) made the event feel homely and welcoming- a feeling that you were amongst friends in your own backyard.

Comfort foods such as the pie event are what will be all about - "Over conversation and comforting foods, people can lose the stigma attached to discussing uncomfortable issues", explains Kathryn.

The team at Connections Catering are also keen on making a difference to our planet by using locally sourced ingredients, employing local talent and keeping their footprint on the environment as minimal as possible.

Kathyrn's partner, Weldon Macdonald, baked a mouth-watering selection of unusual but tasty pies at I Heart Pie, which he told WEN were made with organic ingredients and local produce.


Kathryn and Cath are eager to embark on the team's next feel good event, Say Cheese, which will take place on 17th November 2013. With an emphasis on vintage and photography and with an inkling of cheeses on the menu, looks like they are doing all the right things to make a difference.

A percentage of profits made at each event will go to a local cause. I Heart Pie raised money for Zig Zag, working with families affected by domestic violence.
