Don't be lulled into thinking you have plenty of time to make your arrangements and get your tickets. As the wise old saying goes, 'You snooze, you lose', and that is particularly relevant in this instance. Since its world premiere, CATS has been to over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and seen by more than 73 million people. With that array of numbers if you don't take the opportunity when it's presented you are going to be disappointed.
CATS is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. Since its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 it has been performed for over 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances.
CATS has won the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical and in 1983 the Broadway production received seven Tony awards including Best Musical during its 18 years run in New York.
If you're thinking you've already seen CATS and don't need to go again, then think again.
In recent times CATS' original creative team, Director Trevor Nunn, Choreographer and Associate Director Gillian Lynne, Set Designer John Napier and Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber reworked the original production for its most recent season in the West End. The hit revival has received excellent reviews and extended its West End season due to overwhelming demand. Now that same acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical is coming to Australia for a strictly limited season.
Based on T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the new show is set in a larger-than-life junkyard playground alive with everybody's favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks. The 2015 Olivier Award-nominated and reworked CATS will captivate you with the introduction of a rapping 'street cat' in the famous Rum Tum Tugger role. Just wait until you see the serious breakdancing moves this cat gets up to!
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on the night of the Jellicle Ball and one by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader. Old Deuteronomy must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. Which one will it be?
So don't start thinking of your past and end up missing out on your future. This is not the CATS you already know and love, it is the renewed version you will add to all your other cherished memories.
