Located at
30 Olsen Caves Road, The Caves, Queensland, about 23km north of Rockhampton,
Capricorn Caves boast as the oldest playground, 400 million years in the making. This place has been a tourist destination since 150 years ago but a private owner has been preserving this popular tourist destination so that an abundance of native wildlife and endangered species (which you can discover on tour) can still make this place their home.
We joined
The Cathedral Tour, a 45-minute tour with experienced local guides that deliver the captivating stories of this ancient Australian landscape on small-scale interpretive tours. Our tour guide, Cass, was very informative and blended the information with humour, so our tour was very lively and full of laughter.
The tour guide gave us a lot of interesting information about the cave, image taken by the author
We gathered in front of the kiosk and Cass gave us a safety briefing before we headed up to the cave entrance. Enclosed shoes and insect repellent are highly recommended for this tour. As we arrived at the grand entrance of the cave, Cass reminded us again that taking photos was permitted just without flashing light to protect 5 species of bats that lived inside the cave, including a thumb-sized bat weighing only 7 grams.
As we wandered through the cave, there were some parts of the cave with very low ceilings, especially the one named
Headache Rock* You can see some stalactite on the ceiling of the cave but no stalagmite as the floor of the cave usually covered with
goanno or bat poo.
When we arrived at the part of the cave called Sky Window, you could see some ferns that live on the wall of the caves that only can be found in 3 places in the world, at this cave, at Christmas Island, and in Srilanka.
At last, we arrived at the Cathedral Cave. There are some pew chairs that you can sit on while admiring the cave. Cathedral Cave is a favourite place for weddings and also regularly hosts underground opera events. We had a chance to hear the acoustic that was produced by the cave when Cass put on music. The sound was incredible, some said that the acoustic in Cathedral Cave is on par with the Sydney Opera House.
