A ferry from Docklands to Portarlington Mussel Festival

Portarlington is preparing for the 13th Annual Portarlington Mussel Festival on Saturday, January 12, 2019. And Portarlington should hold this festival as it produces up to 60% of Australia's mussels.

There will be 10 tonnes of local mussels sold on the day with every type of mussel dish imaginable including paellas, steamedmussels with garlic and parsley sauce and mussels in wine. Perhaps you have already started smacking your lips at the thought of so many tasty morsels.

There will be cooking demonstrations and lots of activities for the kids. The day includes entertainment and the headline act this year is Kate Daley and band celebrating the music of Fleetwood Mac.

The entry fee to the festival is only $5 for adults and children are free.

All this sounds great. But what puts some Melbourne people off attending is the drive to Geelong, because it is such a long straight road and often full of lead-foot drivers and heavy trucks. And nobody enjoys trying to find a park at a popular festival.

So the great news is that you can catch a ferry to this event from Docklands.

The Portarlington Ferry will be travelling to the festival direct from Docklands, with a 10.45 am departure as per their normal Saturday service time.

The return journey leaves Portarlington at 4.30 pm. The price is $29 return for adults. You can also get concession prices ($26) and children's tickets ($15). Under 3s go free. To book go to their website. Click here.

If you have plans of bringing mussels home with you think carefully about how you can carry them.

But you should book quickly as this will be a sell-out trip!

If you wish to know more about mussels they also run the Mussels, Wine and Bay Cruise Tour. This is an afternoon cruise around the waters of the Bellarine, including the Portarlington mussel farms.

The experience begins when you walk onto the Portarlington Pier and smell the BBQ mussels. This is your chance to sample the freshest mussels you will ever taste just before you hop on board.

During the one hour tour, you'll be treated to a drink from their bar. This is your chance to try a local cider, wine, beer although you can also order non-alcoholic drinks and hot drinks if you prefer.

A local mussel farmer from Advanced Mussel Supply and The Little Mussel Cafe, will then chat to passengers about all things mussels including what goes on behind the scenes to bring the delicious mussels from Portarlington waters to your plate.

Enjoy the sea breeze from the outdoor decks, or take in the views from the comfy indoor seats. This is a chance to enjoy the magnificent Bellarine Express ferry outside of its normal scheduled service.
