I'm time-pressed and always counting the pennies as a single-mum writer, so going out has to be worth the lipstick. It's the year of discovering tantalizing Melbourne and, sometimes, a tease of Adelaide's treasures. Join me.

Pussy cat, pussy cat, where have you been?

"Mum, can we get a cat?" Oh dear. It was time. My promises and delays were about to collide and I had to face the music (something by Cat Stevens or The Cure). My son and daughter are both (gulp) cat people, but who has the time and patience to teach a kitten all the house rules? Not me! Luckily, a furry selection of mature and family-friendly cats are waiting for adoption if you know where to find them.

Mature cats are looking for the good life in a loving home.

There are animal lovers and then there are animal advocates those selfless souls who recognise that the world is a far better place when it looks after all its creatures, great and small. Taking up more than their fair share of the load is The Cat Protection Society in Greensborough, who exist purely and simply to ensure that as many cats as possible are restored to top health and readiness for their forever homes.

Helped by volunteers, a family adopts their perfect pet cat.

Cats come to the society as strays brought in by council rangers and the public, or from owners who, for many reasons, are unable to keep them. Once they are cleared by the vet for good health, de-sexing, vaccination, worming and are well rid of fleas, the cats are available for adoption. Society staff and volunteers even profile the personalities of each cat to help prospective new owners identify the right one for them.

CPS cats are de-sexed, vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped and free from fleas before they are ready for adoption. They even come with a guarantee.

Micro-chipping all adoptive felines for identification ensures that cats stand the best chance of being reunited with their owners. The society has a history of successfully locating owners when a lost cat with a microchip finds its way to them, and some of the stories are remarkable. Recently one little feline may have been pushing his luck when society staff scanned his microchip. The reading was not immediately identifiable. Nonetheless, his owner was found, but not before society staff had traced the chip to a Chinese manufacturer, who they emailed, subsequently learning that the batch was delivered to a veterinary surgery in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. With that information they were able to contact the vet and identify the owner. It's the stuff of CSI (Cat Society Investigates).

Everything required for a happy cat is available from the society, including discounted adoption packs for take-home essentials.

Volunteers are a dedicated few who keep the cogs turning and the society is keen to hear from anyone interested in rolling up their sleeves. My children were unhappy to learn that they are too young to volunteer (you must be 16yrs or older), however, they are thrilled to be welcomed into the cat enclosure any time to pat, brush or just sit with the cats. Cat therapy for free. Domestic pet therapy is now acknowledged as a valid practice in many nursing homes and some hospitals, as well as being recognised for making great gains for people living with disabilities. Living with a pet is reported to lower heart rate, reduce anxiety and decrease depression, so if you need a bit of time to consider whether or not a cat is right for you, step into the enclosures and relax for a while. Perhaps a cat will choose you.

Excuse me, we are trying to sleep.

I do have to say that there's no better way of feeling that all is right in the world than having a cat curl up on your lap. Winter is on its way. The open fire is ready for stoking and soon I'll be concocting soups. When the lamps go on and I open my book, Prue the Cat, our newest addition to the family, will snuggle in next to me on her throw rug. I won't be going anywhere for a while. I guess I'm a cat person after all (purr).

Prue the Cat promises to be the purr-fect companion, especially in the coming winter months on the couch.
