Thomas 'Tennassee' Williams is one of the United States' greatest playwrights. His work is powerful, moving and rooted in his unhappy family background in the deep South - Columbus Mississippi.

The son of an alcoholic and a snobbish, neurotic Southern Belle, Thomas was one of three children.

After attending university, where he studied journalism, Tennassee supported himself with a string of menial jobs while he struggled to get established as a playwright.

It wasn't until 1944 that he achieved success, and a remarkable success it was - The Glass Menagerie, based loosely on his own family background.

It was followed by a string of other successes - A Streetcar Named Desire, Sweet Bird of Youth and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

This last is now being produced by Stirling Theatre , one of his finest plays based on the relationship of a dying Southern Plantation patriarch and his family.

It's a play of family relationships, power - its exercise and its loss and the sub-texts of bigotry and love.

Director Jane Sherwood has a strong cast for the production - Amanda Watson, Michael Dornan, Dimity Wehr, Ron Arthurs as Big Daddy and Damian Forbes with Brett Shircore and others.

Cat on A Hot Tin Roof runs from April the 10th to the 25th at 8:00pm with matinees on the 12th and 19th at 2:00pm at the Stirling Theatre, Morris Place, Innaloo.

Tickets cost $22 (Concession $20) and are available from 9440 1040 or the TryBooking website .
