Originally from Canberra, I moved to Melbourne for study. You might say that my life is much like this sentence - it began with a capital. Now, having spent a few years in Melbourne, I share my experiences of each city.
The Murrumbidgee River, west of Canberra, is certainly one of the region's greatest natural assets. Casuarina Sands is an area of the River allocated specifically for family excursions.

The Murrumbidgee River
Travel time depends on where in Canberra you're coming from, but from the city, Casuarina Sands will be roughly a 30-40 minute drive.
Once there, facilities available include:
toilets
barbecues
picnic tables
shelter
a playground
drinking water
This makes the Sands probably the
most accommodating public swimming area within forty minutes of the city, considering the state of Lake Burley-Griffin as no longer a safe body of water to swim in.

Swimming Area
The water at Casuarina Sands will usually be no less warm or clean than ocean water and ideal for casual swimmers. Fishing is also allowed in the area and fish of a good size are generally prevalent.
There is a tire swing available along the riverside but precaution must be taken to ensure the water is deep enough before jumping from the swing.
Other potential dangers to be taken into consideration when visiting the area include:
- snakes
- fishing hooks
- rocky riverside floor
- lack of mobile reception
- sunburn

Casuarina Sands
A great place for a weekend picnic with the family.
