The is a great excuse to go to this delightful part of Victoria! It will be held on 19th to 21st July 2019 at the Theatre Royal, 30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine.
The Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival (CDOC) is an annual event showcasing 12 movies over 3 days, featuring many fascinating characters. The 2019 program features a world premiere event, an Australian premiere screening, a Victorian premiere screening/event and a Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival exclusive screening and event. As well as these, there will be eight other movies. Some great ones in there!
The program is as follows:
*FRIDAY 19TH JULY at 10.30 am**
THE PONDS - In the middle of London is a suburb called Hampstead Heath. It is about 320 hectares of forest and parkland plus three swimming ponds. People swim in these pools all year round, regardless of the weather. This also happened during the time of Keats and Constable.
This movie shows the beauty of the English seasons and directors filmed the swimmers over 12 months as they laughed, sang, complained, talked or simply sought respite from all the day's events.
AT 1.30 PM**
ISLAND OF THE HUNGRY GHOSTS -Christmas Island is located off the coast of Indonesia and is an Australian territory. On it are many migratory crabs travelling in their millions from the jungle towards the ocean. They do this on the full moon and have been doing it for hundreds of thousands of years.
Poh Lin Lee talks to asylum seekers on this island in an attempt to support them in an unbearable and uncertain situation. This is about the local islanders and their hungry ghost rituals and Poh Lin is a counsellor.
This movie is a documentary and well worth seeing.
AT 4.30 PM
THE DISTANT BARKING OF DOGS - is about ten-year-old Oleg, who lives in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. This is a warzone where there are continual anti-aircraft fire and missile strikes. Sometimes these sounds are in the distance, while at other times they are very close.
At school, Oleg learns about the bomb shelter and what to do when encountering a landmine. While many have left this dangerous area, Oleg stays there with his grandmother, who has taken care of him since the death of his mother. This film follows a year in the life of Oleg.
* SATURDAY 20TH JULY at 10.30 am
HAPPY SAD MAN - This is a basic documentary on how Australian men experience and cope with mental health struggles.
It covers from Bondi Beach to the outback, to a war photographer travelling the world, or a farmer in country Victoria. It explains that mental illness doesn't discriminate. This film covers suicide and all that this entails.
AT 1.30 pm
ON HER SHOULDERS - Nadia is a 23-year-old Yazidi, who has survived genocide and sexual slavery committed by ISIS. In this movie, she tells her story to the world.
* SUNDAY 21ST JULY at 10.30 am
BABIES - Most people love babies. This is a stunning new movie which follows four babies around the world - from first breath to first steps. It goes from Mongolia to Namibia to San Francisco to Tokyo.
Babies shows the earliest stages of the journey of humanity which are unique and universal to us all.
AT 1.30 pm
THE FINAL QUARTER - Cheers turned to boos in the final years of AFL champion footballer Adam Goodes' career when he publicly called out racism. This film tracks Australia's heated response to this act.
AT 4.30 pm
MAKALA - Makala is Swahili for charcoal and this is a new documentary and a powerful testament to one man's commitment to his family. It also shows his endurance in working to provide them with a brighter future. Kasongo is living in the Congo with his wife and daughters and dreams of buying a plot of land to build his family a home.
AT 7.30 pm
THE CLEANERS - When you put something on the web, can you be sure it stays there? In this movie, you will see a hidden shadow industry of digital cleaning, where the Internet rids itself of what it doesn't like. The question is, who is controlling what we seeā¦ and what we think?
