Centrally located in the suburb of Castle Hill, sits a heritage-listed pink granite monolith of the same name. Sitting at 286m high, the summit offers stunning 360 degree views over Townsville and Magnetic Island. So on a recent trip, a must-do on our list, was to experience a sunset from atop Castle Hill. After contemplating the walk up and with dusk fast approaching we took the easy way and hailed a taxi. Firstly to save our legs, the actual workout in this instance was not our priority, and secondly to ensure we were at the top for sunset. But whether you drive, ride, run or walk to the top, the views, once there, are just magic.

There are many trails that can be taken and explored and the main two and most popular, the Cudtheringa Track and Goat Track, are located on the city side. Both tracks have recently been upgraded with impressive stairs of stone and walkways, hours of work. All tracks are well worn and come dusk, the peak time, literally hundreds of locals and visitors take on the challenge and walk or run to the top.

Though if the way up looks way too energetic or time is not on your side, the 2.6km sealed road is the easiest option providing ample parking. But do keep a lookout for all the walkers, joggers and runners taking this route too, there are a lot of them!

Whichever way you choose to get there, once at the top the views are superb and go on for miles. There are a number of vantage points all with uninterrupted vistas. Most stunning is looking east at Magnetic Island sitting in all its splendour just 8km off-shore. Turn west and watch the sun casts its glow over the outer suburbs.

As darkness takes hold, it's time to descend. We took the Goat Track as our return trip down the mountain and the installation of new stone stairs made it a lot easier. It's still steep in parts but better on the legs than I imagine it would have been prior. This track has you exiting towards the rear of the CBD and only took another 20 minutes to walk back to Denham Street, near the heart of the restaurant district.

With plenty of parking, public amenities and drink fountains, the summit area is well appointed and maintained. The views are superb and it was the perfect ending to a beautiful, sunny Townsville day.
