Built from 1937 to 1939, Carrick Hill Estate within the suburb of Springfield is a heritage estate where visitors can visit the house and surrounding gardens. This estate was the home of Edward Hayward and Ursula Barr Smith, members of two of the most prominent families in Adelaide. Much of the gardens reflect the English style of the manor, making use of cellular structures such as hedges and stone paving.

Though we visited at a time after the peak of the spring blossoms, there were still a good number of plants in bloom to provide an eye-catching display. Some of the notable parts of the garden are the various rose beds containing both old-fashioned and new varieties that were winners at the Royal Adelaide Show and pear trees trained to grow into an arch-like shape. There is also a mini-museum in the former horse stables featuring gardening tools that were used back in the days.

If you have kids, there is a storybook trail that winds throughout the gardens, containing various structures styled off prominent aspects of children storybooks such as Peter Rabbit, The Hobbit and the Harry Potter series. Visitors are able to pick up a pamphlet to help them guide their way on the walk. We are not sure if it is part of the storybook trail - there is a Japanese-style garden near the entrance featuring a statue of Momotaro, the main character of Japanese folklore that originated from the Okayama Prefecture.

For those wanting a bit of break, the gardens have a cafe where you can enjoy a wide range of pastries and a few Australian style café foods along with coffee. There is also a gift shop on the first floor of the mansion with many of the items bearing the designs of plants found within the gardens.

Admission into the gardens and grounds is free but be aware that an admission fee applies for those that want to view the inner rooms of the manor. Plenty of parking space is available at the entrance of the gardens, with the mobility impaired having use of the service entrance near Meadowvale Road for easy access to the manor.
