English manor house blended with 1930’s technology
During my recent visit to Adelaide from Sydney, I visited Carrick Hill, a 15 minute drive from the Adelaide CBD.

A guide led us through this gorgeous home designed in the 1930's by newlyweds, Edward Hayward and Ursula Barr Smith. The land on which Carrick Hill now sits was given to them as a wedding gift from Ursula's father.

Carrick Hill has the appearance of a 17th century English manor house blended with 1930's technology giving an extraordinary glimpse into the lifestyle of wealthy Australians in mid-20th century.

Over the years, the Haywards collected art, sculptures, paintings and antique furniture which are magnificent to view.

The Edwardian-style gardens are stunning to gaze at and interesting to explore. In the midst of these impressive grounds is a Children's Story Book Trail using classic tales to encourage a child's imagination.

Carrick Hill also has a Spring Program with various exhibits that run through to the end of November. One of these exhibits, "Endless Pleasure Exhibition", is about how Australians have chosen to experience gardens and gardening.

Another exhibition, "Nature Play Day" is a 4 hour outdoor activity for families. Check Carrick Hill website for further details.

Entry to the house is $12 an adult. The entry fee assists ongoing costs of the house. There is also a superb café on the grounds.
