February is the month of carnivals in
Italy , and for centuries there have been parades, dances and masquerade balls to celebrate the event. Italians sure know how to put on a party!
The Italian community in Adelaide have been celebrating Carnevale for 39 years. Experience
"Little Italy" at the
Adelaide Showground as it showcases Italian culture - food, wine, music, art, cars, fashion, cooking demonstrations, sport and exhibitions.
The outdoor plaza will be transformed into a typical
'Italian piazza' with its aromas, various food, delicacies, market style marquees and alfresco outdoor dining areas.
The paved and landscaped plaza with fountains and coloured lighting gives the essence of
Italy on the warm summer nights of Carnevale.
Joey Fimmano's European Classics featuring
Graeme Wright and
Grace Rizzo is the headline act.
Grace Bawden ,
The Band of the South Australian Police ,
Adelaide Youth Strings Orchestra ,
The Chuck Berry Show, Shaken Not Stirred , the
Brighton Buskers are also on the bill, along with favourites
La Taccarata, La Famiglia d'Aspromonte, St Nicholas Dancers, and Italcanti. Funny man
James Liotta will MC the festival.
The festival also supports and nurtures young and emerging talent, giving them an opportunity to perform on the
Youth Stage. This year's line up includes
DJ Pier, Lucky-Seven Swing, Three Star General ,
Frank Loves Joan , to other more traditional acts with an Italian flavour. A variety of entertainment is on offer over the weekend to suit everybody's music taste.
Carnevale is thrilled to secure popular
Adelaide cover band
Mr Buzzy to perform over the weekend. With their energetic and dynamic stage presence, the group is known for getting the 'party started' and appeal to all ages.
The popular
'Ready Steady Mangia' pasta eating competition is back again, and this has to be seen to be believed!
The
San Remo Precinct has many marvellous things on the menu with cooking masterclasses featuring celebrity chef
Adam Swanson and
Michaels - Angelakis, Keelan and Weldon. Something new the festival is introducing is
"Barista Brilliance" with
Brasilia coffee masterclasses.
The
Kids Corner has always been a hit with kids and families, offering great children's entertainment and storytelling. Entertainment will include children's group
Rainbow Land, magician
Steve Preston and a special presentation from
Star Academy performing arts institute. Kids can learn the art of mask making, and enjoy free colouring-in and craft tables.
The forums, now in their fourth year, are growing in stature and to some the intellectual stimulus they offer are a welcome contrast to
Carnevale's revelry and frivolity. Fascinating topics are on offer such as
Growing Your Own Food and
The Secrets of Beautiful Bread.
On Sunday night the
Carnevale's way of saying
'arriverderci' is with a spectacular fireworks display.
Can a weekend of
Italian culture get any better?
In the meantime, watch Dean Martin singing
That's Amore . If that doesn't put you in the mood to enjoy everything
Italian nothing will!
