Laz's Lane and Rita's Way are community laneway beautification projects created by local volunteers in Carnegie in Melbourne's inner south-east. These laneways have been transformed from dull, concrete alleys to vibrant, interactive street art galleries in a homely space that is full of surprises.

Laz's Lane runs from Koornang Road through to Graceburn Avenue, near the primary school south of Carnegie. It's only a very short distance but a lot is packed into this space to stimulate the senses. It includes dozens of vibrant paintings, including two visually striking murals from artist Brigitte Dawson , as well as a fairy box, figurine cabinets, hopscotch, a book library and ceramic art. The laneway is planted out with various shrubs to give it a more natural feel.

Rita's Way is on the opposite side of Koornang Road, heading east. At the time of my visit, this is a work in progress, that will hopefully expand to match the splendour of Laz's Lane. Rita's Way includes planter boxes, ceramic art and paintings.

If you want to know more about the laneway and get involved with the project, take a look at the laneway volunteer group's page . It's the best way to keep up to date with the latest activities to beautify the laneways. When visiting the laneway, please respect the space and the efforts of the local volunteers by keeping it clean and tidy, and not damaging the art.
