The music is fascinating, and in fact, I would go so far as to say it is "awesome" and very catchy. The story is also timeless. You can now see a production of this famous story at His Majesty's Theatre in the city. It will be on from 21st to 28th July 2018 and will be presented by the West Australian Opera. It is a long show, taking 3 hours including intervals. It will be presented in four acts.
ABOUT CARMEN Carmen was written by Frenchman, George Bizet. It is based on an 1845 novella written by the French writer, Prosper Merimιe.
Carmen is a Spanish gypsy girl who is unscrupulous in matters of the law and of the heart. Carmen is working in a factory in Seville when the story opens. Carmen and her fellow cigarette-factory workers stream out at the end of a day of working when the local young men surround Carmen and start to flirt.
However, Carmen explains her heart can't be tied down with the unforgettable habanera, which begins with the words "Love is a rebellious bird that none can tame". She is then arrested for attacking another woman with a knife.
In order to escape, Carmen then seduces Don Jose. The pair become lovers and Don Jose ends up running away from the army to be with Carmen. However, a few months later, Carmen gets tired of Don Jose and becomes interested in a bullfighter named Escamillo.
In a fit of jealousy, Don Jose follows Carmen to the amphitheatre where the bullfighters are about to begin. I will not spoil the rest of the story just in case you do not know it. You will have to see this show at His Majesty's to decide for yourself!
