Why are they hiding it?
There's a new star in town! Popular American burger restaurant chain Carl's Jr. snuck into South Australia in July, opening a new store at Mt Barker. If you're wondering what those big juicy American hamburgers that drip sauces and are packed with ingredients are like, now's your chance!
Carl's Jr - Mt Barker.
I took the family up to Mt Barker on Saturday night to check it out. It's right by the Mt Barker Railway Station, on the corner of Dutton road and Gawler street. Even though the mid-winter weather was terrible, the place was packed! It's got a cool look with wooden look fittings, tiled walls and spot lighting (lower than other fast food chains), which give it a cosy and welcoming feel. Prices are pretty much the same as any fast food burger chain.
On the uncrowded menu, there's thick and standard beef burgers, mushroom burgers, chicken burgers and sides like fries, onion rings, and salads. Simple cookies and ice-cream desserts are the dessert options and you pour your own soft drinks at the beverage bar or you can order ice cream milkshakes. The chicken tenders are a crunchy must try. Breakfast burgers and platters of bacon, scrambled eggs, beef patties and hash browns are available, and The Breakfast Burger is available all day! Kids combos are on the menu too with the usual fancy cup kids like.

Once you've ordered, the meals are brought to your table so waitresses are always out on the floor delivering food and cleaning up, a welcome improvement in standards. The service was quick enough, given the restaurant and drive through were flat out - some of the tables overflow into the AM/PM service station store where it's chilly, but at least you can get a seat. There's USB and 240V charging ports built into the bench tables for a quick device recharge on the go!
The ingredients are made from scratch which really separates Carl's Jr from the big two here in Oz, and the burgers are presented differently to avoid the old 'fillings falling out the back of the burger while you eat' situation.
They're big burgers!
It's great to see a new burger joint in town that prides itself on making everything in store and not being pretentious about it. Head up to Mt Barker and check out Carl's Jr this weekend!
