Located in Lane Cove,
Carisbrooke House is a historic museum of life in the 1880s and is the only house museum in Sydney to capture the flavour of the Victorian middle-class lifestyle.
Built in the 1880s from locally quarried sandstone, the house sits overlooking Burns Bay on the east and the Lane Cove River to the west.
With a beautiful Sunday afternoon ahead, it was the perfect opportunity to tour this lovingly restored house and explore Burns Bay Reserve.
After a warm greeting, the tour begins with a short video to recap the area's local history, and it was here that I learnt more about the Brooks family, who built Carisbrook house. The tour moves on through each room, including the hallway, drawing room, dining room, bedroom and kitchen. Our guide offered an interesting commentary throughout with information about the decoration, furniture and how the Brooks family would have lived.
The tour ends in the leafy gardens, which have ancient sandstone pathways and steps to lead you down to the water's edge of Burns Bay and into Linley Park. From here, there's a lovely walk along the riverbank with peaceful water views.
This visit is a great experience to imagine life as you would have lived it one hundred and thirty years ago.
