Are you ever looking for something different from the usual weekend escapes or museum visits? The Bunker Cartoon Gallery in Coffs Harbour , New South Wales, is just the place for that 'ooh' and 'aah' feeling that you receive from experiencing something unique that can bring a smile or laugh to your day's encounter.

Currently being held at the Bunker Cartoon Gallery, from 2nd February to 25 March 2018, is the #current ">Caricatures You Have Known Art Exhibition . The Bunker houses the largest archive of Australian print cartoons, which is constantly increasing with the addition of digital images, totally approximately 27,000 caricatures in their current collection. This collection is available for viewing in either bound catalogues or via a touchscreen display.

The Bunker was originally used by the Royal Australian Air Force during war years as a communication base providing information for air and shipping convoys. To keep safe from prying eyes, the bunker was in a perfect location as it was underground. After the war, the facility was used by the Civil Aviation Authority until 1980. In 1985, the Coffs City Rotary Club started a competition for black and white cartoons. The entries of this competition provide the basis for the collection that exists today. As the collection grew, a new home was required. Rotarian John Champion was aware of the derelict underground bunker and had a vision of how to redevelop the site for a permanent home for the cartoon collection.

The Bunker is available for hire and fully catered with bar or you can DIY. Close to the city, yet completely sound-proofed and air-conditioned, The Bunker is an excellent venue for weddings, birthdays, corporate functions, club meets and presentations. A PA and projector are also available. Regular exhibitions, special events and cartoon workshops are held at The Bunker.

The current exhibition represents a collection of caricatures from the past thirty years of the Rotary Cartoon Awards, some of which are favourites (and some not so much) from political, media, entertainment and sporting identities. Visitors can view a unique collection of caricatures of every Prime Minister since Federation as well, providing an educational experience for the young ones and a trip down memory lane for others.

The #venue ">Rotary Cartoon Awards is an annual comic and cartooning competition run by the Bunker Gallery. The 2017 winner was Judy Nadin for her caricature of United States President, Donald Trump. The Bunker Gallery runs a variety of exhibitions each year. More information on these can be located on their website.

The Bunker Cartoon Gallery is open every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Cost of entry is $5.00 for adults and children under 16 years is $3.00. Children under 5 years are free.

Coffs Harbour is only a 4.25 hour drive from [LINK=https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/]Brisbane[/LINK,] so you could easily make this a weekend escape or a full day excursion. Either way, set a day to make the trip to Coffs Harbour before the exhibition runs out. I will definitely be making the trip down to Coffs Harbour in the not too distance future.
