Affordable Childcare - its what you've been looking for
Every day on the news there seems to be a new article regarding the concerns parents have with childcare. Well I seem to have just stumbled upon one possible answer to these concerns via the recently launched Caresquare.
Basically Caresquare is a platform that connects families to share the cost of a nanny. Known as "shared care", or "nanny share" – by connecting local families, families experience their own nanny for the cost of daycare, while also providing a service where local families can meet. How cool is that?!
I have a feeling this brilliant little idea is going to take off, whether this is due to it being able to provide childcare for as low as $60 dollars a day, or due to its ability to create childcare that works for all sorts of families. In fact, I know it is going to take off, because within a month of launching there are well over 150 families across the country in the process of being linked up other families and looking for a nanny.
There are three ways Caresquare can help families with their childcare costs.
Family Matching The first step involved in the process is called family matching. Basically once you put in your childcare preferences into the system, you will be given the details of matching families. These preferences will include everything from the distance between families, the days you need care, whether you need daycare or after school care, and even if you want to match with a vaccinated or non-vaccinated family. Then for a small cost of $19 you can chat to these families for up to three months, thus making sure that you find a family you feel 100% comfortable sharing care with.
Regardless of whether you have found a family to share a nanny, Caresquare also offers the option to find you the perfect nanny for your kids. For $99 Caresquare will find, interview and offer you a shortlist of nannies who appear most suitable for your family's needs. They have strict criteria regarding the nannies, with each required to be (i) over 18 (ii) have a Certificate III in Children's Services or 2 years of experience (iii) Blue Card (iv) Police check (v) Driver's license (vi) First aid CPR and more.
Shared Care Management Basically what is on offer here is what really makes Caresquare stand out. They take care of all of the paperwork from afar, such as the nanny's insurance and tax requirements, truly taking the hassle out of childcare for families. They also have a payment system which calculates complex equations to ensure that costs are fair between families (apparently it is not as simple as dividing it 50:50).
There are all ready 150 families online and more are signing up each day.
For Nannies Nannies who apply to work for a family through Caresquare can look forward to working with a maximum of four children, which is significantly less that the 1:15 ratio I was used to when working in childcare. They can also enjoy a great pay rate, earning $22 an hour for one child, and up to $28 per hour for four children (plus overtime rates). Caresquare also advocates that the work given to nannies is "child-related" meaning that nannies are treated as childcare workers and not housekeepers. Nannies will still be expected to help cook meals for the children and help with basic cleaning, but gone are the days where nannies have to take time away from the children to iron business shirts.
For Kids Three years ago when I was employed in a childcare centre, I was required to look after 15 youngsters at any given time all with major differences in ages, abilities and temperaments. The positive for kids who are cared for by a Caresquare nanny is that because there are only four children, they receive high interaction with their carer. Also by only looking after four kids, the nanny is able to easily transport the children on adventures outside the home. Depending on the families' preferences, this could mean a simple ice-cream or some active play at a nearby park.
