We drove to Murray Bridge that morning where the cruise departs at 11am sharp from the Murray Bridge main wharf. After Covid Safe check-in using the QR code, we were given our table number. We did not have our own table but had to share a long table with four other guests.
The captain then welcomed all guests and gave some housekeeping rules and the layout of the vessel. There are two sun decks, one outside the dining area and another on the upper deck accessible by stairs. Toilets and a small lounge area on the lower deck. He also gave us a briefing of the cruise. The vessel will cruise upstream to the northern end of Murray Bridge, then turn around and continue to the southern end of Murray Bridge, then back again to the main wharf travelling a total of 24kms.
Houses along the river
Then the staff came round to take our orders for lunch. There is a choice of a main course and a dessert. Besides fish or meat schnitzels, there are salads, vegetarian or gluten-free option as well. I had the grilled fish and my friend had the beef schnitzel, both served with chips and garden salad. The food was delicious and the portion size generous. For dessert, there is a choice of ice cream, sundaes or apple crumble. We both had the apple crumble with ice cream which was really nice.
The mighty Murray
The Captain Proud is a licensed premise and has a well-stocked bar in the dining room for guests to purchase beer, wine or tea, coffee or soft drinks.
The well-stocked bar
After lunch, most guests went to the deck outside the dining room or to the upper deck to enjoy the fresh air and see the beautiful sceneries the mighty River Murray has to offer. We passed by sandstone cliffs, wetlands, and beautiful houses perched by the river. The captain gave comprehensive commentaries on the points of interest along the river and the history of the area. After 3 hours of cruising, we returned to Murray Bridge for disembarkation. What a wonderful afternoon indeed and I highly recommend the cruise to anyone wishing to experience the beauty of our Mighty Murray.
