Take the time this weekend to experience the tranquility of a scenic water reserve like no other. Captain Logan Campground at Lake Wivenhoe will give you an opportunity to do this with its wonderfully located waterfront campground.

Lake Wivenhoe, more commonly referred to as Wivenhoe Dam, is situated in the Somerset Region approximately a 1 hour drive from Brisbane. A haven for those who enjoy water based recreation, it is within easy reach for a daytrip or short camping stay.

Perhaps one of the most attractive features of Lake Wivenhoe is that there are restrictions on power boating which means all boats must have low-emission engines and cannot exceed 6 knots. Waterskiing, jetskiing and tubing are not permitted. Because of this, Lake Wivenhoe attracts a different type of crowd. You will not observe hoons tearing around on jetskis and boats. Instead, you will be surrounded with like minded campers wanting to enjoy the calm and peaceful ambience that Lake Wivenhoe provides.

Captain Logan Campground is situated on the banks of Lake Wivenhoe and provides 50 unpowered sites suitable for both tents and caravans. As a bonus, flushable toilets and hot showers are provided along with electric BBQs and drinking water. For $20-$25 a night (depending on low or peak season) this is a pretty sweet deal.

Recently undergoing a change in management, Captain Logan Campground is now operated by Parks and Resorts Operational Management. Bookings can be made via phone (0428 310 740) or email: [email protected]. Sites are preselected when you book. By some stroke of luck on a long weekend we ended up getting, in our opinion, the best site in the whole campground. Here's a tip: number 40 is down the end of the campground and very close to the water. Although it is a bit further from the amenities, it is definitely worth it. Number 40 will provide you with breathtaking views because there are no other campsites to obstruct your vision.

Each site has a tap close by which makes it very easy to obtain drinking water. Unfortunately fireplaces are not provided however each site has a concrete slab so you can bring your own. There are several bins located around the campground which ensures that the campground is clean at all times. You can't park right next to your campsite but car parks are located very close by, depending on which campsite you have. Amenities are cleaned daily and there is an adequate number of toilets and showers. We didn't experience any queues during our time here.

Lake Wivenhoe is an ideal location for kayaking and canoeing. The water is very calm due to the lack of powered boats which makes for an enjoyable, relaxing experience. Alternatively, you may wish to do a spot of fishing. Another tip, Lake Wivenhoe is populated with redclaw crayfish. Throw some rockmelon or parboiled potatoes into a pot for bait and fingers crossed you'll catch yourself some juicy redclaws. For animal lovers there are plenty of koalas and kangaroos to be seen. Waterbirds are plentiful ranging from pelicans to ducks and darters.
