First Online Cartoon Exhibition Featuring Sir Elton John
The National Cartoon Gallery at Coffs Harbour is one of my favourite tourism visits and plenty of others feel the same as this gallery is the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Attracting tourists from all over Australia and overseas, the gallery offers competitions, workshops, movie nights and special children's events, which are held each year.

As COVID-19 has halted visits, the gallery is now giving you the opportunity to check out the 'Captain Fantastic' Cartoon Competition. This exhibition is the gallery's first online launched exhibition and is a tribute to Sir Elton John. If you like any of the artworks, there are prints and some originals for sale. Cartoonists have portrayed Sir Elton in a satirical and comical way, using different shapes, sizes and mediums. The exhibition video is bound to entertain.

The gallery is located at 1 John Champion Way, Coffs Harbour. The building is an authentic underground WWII bunker that has been converted to a unique exhibition space, which at present, is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation and addition to the current building. Initially, the idea of creating a Gallery of this kind was largely thanks to the Coffs City Rotary Club, and in particular, Tom Hamilton-Foster and the late John Champion, who acquired sponsorships and funding from local businesses for the restoration of the bunker building to be established.

The gallery is a not-for-profit registered charity and custodian of well over 23,000 cartoons from leading Australian and international cartoonists, including bequeaths of rare works.

The 'Captain Fantastic' Cartoon Exhibition commenced on 1st May and will run until 31st July, so there will be plenty of time for you to hop online and watch this fascinating video. If you liked the video, you may like to donate a small amount to cover costs of entry during these social distancing times, as well as assisting in fundraising for their new permanent exhibition "History of Australia A Larrikin View". Or perhaps purchase the Captain Fantastic Calendar (July 2020 to June 2021) for $25.00. To make any purchase, you can do so by email at

To keep up with all the happenings, The Gallery produces a newsletter, which can be read here. Please check out the website for upcoming exhibitions and reopening times when the restrictions are lifted.
