Capri Island is located on the south side of the Bay of Naples, it makes a good day trip excursion or a holiday destination. You can reach Capri Island by taking a hydrofoil boat from both the Sorrento Coast and Molo Beverello Port in Naples. It is best to check with the information desks at the port for up-to-date ticket prices and timetables. One of the main hydrofoil services is SNAV, if you would like to research prices and times before going their website is useful. My trip was taken during summer and the return ticket at that time cost €20.

The return journey from Naples to Capri Island on a hydrofoil boat takes about 40 minutes each way. The boat is air conditioned and has refreshments available on board making the journey pleasant.

This website with information about Capri Island provides a good idea of what to expect. Once you arrive at the Marina Grande Port in Capri Island you will be able to see the information desk for the boat tours around the Island. The tourist box will offer you tours from different companies so it is best to check if the Grotta Azzurra is included.

The main company is Capri Boats, their website provides information on the different services they offer. I went for the Capri Boats service as I had seen a leaflet for this in the hydrofoil boat. The boat trip is a group tour for roughly 15 people and the price is €15 per person and it takes 2 hours.* Once the ticket has been purchased there is a waiting area next to the information desk and you will be called once the boat is ready.

The boat tour of the island allows you to see the buildings, trees and monuments from a different perspective.

The boat driver will stop the boat at the point of interest; information is given in both Italian and English by the driver using a microphone. The service is very well thought out and for example when pointing out the purple reef the driver rotated the boat on the spot to ensure everyone had a chance to see it.

Capri Island is a hot spot for celebrities and it just so happened that we were lucky enough to see the boat that belonged to the Sultan of Qatar.

The Grotta Azzurra is one of the main attractions on this journey. The driver will stop outside the cave and everyone has the option to take a row boat visit inside the grotto. There is an extra charge of €12 per person for this and can only be paid in cash.** You do have the option to stay on the main boat whilst others take this visit. The natural reflection of the light against the water line causes the cave to be lit up in a sparkling blue colour. The oarsmen on this particular occasion sang 'o sole mio' whilst in the cave, the echoes really created an amazing atmosphere.

Once the whole trip is completed the boat driver takes you back to the port where the journey began. You might want to grab a bite to eat, on the island there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. The only downfall is that prices are higher than other places in Italy, for example a main course of Gnocchi and lemonade cost €22. Price aside, it was a delicious Italian meal.

My friend ordered an alcoholic cocktail costing €15.

I would say that Capri Island has something for everyone. The beaches are nice and clean making them suitable for the whole family; it is always worth taking along your swim suit and towel in case you feel like going for a swim.

This stunning island surrounded by the sea makes it perfect for a couple's trip. And of course if you like travelling on your own then there is plenty of exploring to do.
