The Capertee River

runs over a 105-kilometre course from the Great Dividing Range through the Capertee Valley, the second-largest canyon in the world, toppling the United States' Grand Canyon in terms of width.
A good section of the Capertee River runs through Glen Davis, the only population centre of any kind in the Capertee Valley, located in the central tablelands between Lithgow and Mudgee.
The section of the Capertee River that runs through Glen Davis is quite shallow, and combined with camping at the Coorongooba campground, makes a good and fun day activity for children. Some sections of the river can be deep enough for a swim, so adults can also enjoy the cool, clear flowing waters.
The river bed is sandy so wading in the water is quite safe although wearing flip-flops may also be a good idea when navigating some pebbly parts.
To get there, you'd be driving through unsealed roads. While it is better to use a 4WD, a 2WD sedan can easily make it. After some rain, however, be mindful that there is at least one river crossing that might be too deep to safely navigate through.
Note that the only facility available in the area is the dropdown toilets at Coorongooba campground. You need to bring your own food and water and pretty much everything else. Very importantly, bring your own rubbish with you.
