On Sunday the 7th of November 2021, the Workers' Educational Association will be leading a tour to Cape Jervis and Talisker Silver Mine on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Cape Jervis, the gateway to Kangaroo Island, is located approximately 110 kilometres from Adelaide. It has become a popular base for fishing and boating. The nearby state-heritage Fishery Beach is the site of the former Cape Jervis Whale Fishery and you will learn all about whaling here.

At the tip of the peninsula, on Starfish Hill, you will see the first wind farm built in South Australia. The consistently high winds makes this area perfect for energy-producing wind turbines.

You will then explore the ruins of Talisker Silver Mine at Delamere. The mine was one of the largest in the state and its ruins illustrate typical 19th-century Cornish mining and ore processing techniques.

Along the way, you will also visit Myponga Reservoir and the historic township. With a capacity of 27 gigalitres, the reservoir was built to support the region's population growth and industry expansion at that time. I'm sure you'll be surprised to find out the mystery that lies under the water!

The tour will cost $119 per person, and that includes a set of extensive notes. Lunch will be at your own expense in Cape Jervis. A certain level of fitness is required to participate in this tour, so please be mindful of that when booking. Further information is available on the WEA website.
