A friend of mine was complaining that there were no interesting coffee shops in Chermside, when their prayers were answered by the opening of Cantina 817 on Gympie Road just a short walk down Gympie Road from the Westfield shopping centre.
With a name that uses the word Cantina you would have visions of either lots of bad Tex Mex cuisine or something closer to a Mexican saloon as featured in many bad western movies. Instead it is a lovely little cafe/restaurant/takeaway with a varied menu that includes both predictable cafe staples and innovative dishes.
The downstairs section looks a little dark with lots of reds and blacks, however the upstairs roof top section is festooned with pot plants and the walls are covered in bright murals. A relaxing location even situated right next to busy Gympie Road.
The Cantina Noodle Burger where they make the burger buns out of noodles is better than those Japanese rice burgers but I am not sure whether this type of burger will become popular. Give it a try and make your own mind.
Planks are tapas style selections designed for sharing. Specials include planks with three or five items - great to order with drinks. The tapas selections will make me return and bring more of my friends.
