Where is that you ask? Canmore sits 106 kilometres to the west of Calgary, on the TransCanada Highway in the Rocky Mountains.

Its origins come from the early days of the railroad and later it was a coal mining town. When the mine closed Canmore struggled for a few years unsure of its future. It received news in the early '80s that it would be the home of the Nordic Centre for the 1988 Winter Olympics. The town has tripled in size since then and has become a thriving community.

Back in the day, it was a haven for hippies and people who didn't want to spend their lives in the cities. People from across Canada and the world had flocked there. Now it is home to 12,317 people who live and work in the area.

There is a contingent of around 5,000 that own a second home there. Most of those are skiers who head to Canmore for long weekends or school vacations so they can be closer to the ski hills. Many of these can be rented through the summer and winter seasons. Go to www.canmorealberta.com to start your search for accommodations.

Scenic Canmore sits in a bowl surrounded by numerous peaks. The most famous of which are called the Three Sisters. There are unspoilt areas for hiking and backpacking into the back country. It is recommended that you study up or go with a seasoned guide.

During ski season, helicopter skiing is another venture that has come into play in the last 40 years or so. Powder hounds will do anything to find pristine snow where they can make their own marks.

The Nordic Centre is still used in Canmore and for those who prefer to do their skiing the cross country way there are numerous trails to follow. The Olympic Biathletes and Cross Country ski teams trained here winter and summer.

With plenty of varying accommodations in and around Canmore, there are a multitude of places to stay and eat and just plain enjoy your outdoor experience. Be you a hiker, a skier or someone who would just like to spend some time, it is worth taking a look at this little town that has come into its own.

Whether you are sticking around Calgary or Banff, Canmore is in between them and certainly worth a look.
