Here in Canberra, the Canberra Theatre Centre is the well-known venue for plays, musicals, concerts, Shakespeare, and other stage productions. But did you know that Canberra also has one of the oldest established theatre companies in Australia?
Founded in 1932, the
, otherwise known as Canberra REP, is a not-for-profit organization that has so far staged over 500 productions. Canberra REP is based within the grounds of the Australian National University. They manage their own theatre, Theatre 3, a well-equipped theatre with a seating capacity of 188.
Canberra REP stages six major productions each year. In 2019, they have an exciting lineup of productions. Recently they staged a brilliant adaptation of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen's classic play,
A Doll's House, with the English version by Simon Stephens and directed by Aarne Neeme AM.
The second production of 2019 is an adaptation of one of the twentieth century's most successful books,
To Kill A Mockingbird. This adaptation of the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee is by Christopher Sergel and directed by Anne Somes.
To Kill A Mockingbird will run from March 28-April 13, with matinee performances on April 6. 7 and 13 at 2pm.
Other stage productions for 2019 include:
The World Goes 'Round, a multi-award winning Off-Broadway revue;
The Art of Coarse Acting, a selection of six short plays that demonstrate the hilarious ways in which things can go wrong for community theatre companies;
The Woman in the Window, an Australian play by Alma De Groen that looks at the lives of women, art and independence in two different periods of time; and finally Noel Coward's
Waiting in the Wings, which is a joint production between Canberra REP and Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council.
