Australia and Japan already enjoy a close relationship that dates back to 1957 when Prime Minister Menzies visit Japan and the signing of an economic agreement between both countries. While new free-trade and defence technology co-operation agreements continue to strengthen the economic relationship, the social and cultural ties between both nations have also blossomed over the years.

Here in Canberra, the three decades old sister-city relationship with Nara has been bringing Japanese and Australian communities together. The Embassy of Japan in Canberra has also actively supported many Japanese cultural programs that have strengthened social bonds and understanding. October brings the sights and sounds of Japan to Canberra as the Canberra Nara Candle Festival returns for another year.

The Nara Tokae takes place in the parks and world heritage sites of Nara, Japan every August. To celebrate the sister city relationship between Nara and Canberra, Canberra has also held Canberra Nara Candle Festival in October since 2003. The festival is about bringing the Japanese and Australian communities together in a evening of peace and goodwill. Its popularity shows the growing interests Canberrans have for the Japanese culture and warm regard for Nara.

The 2,000 shimmering candles at this year's Canberra Nara Candle Festival marks 21 years of the sister city relationship. In addition to the centrepiece of candles lit at dusk, this FREE festival will feature elements of Japanese culture for everyone to enjoy. There will be familiar arts and crafts such as calligraphy, lantern making, origami, ikebana and kite flying. Fans of Japanese food and products will be able to browse the market and stalls. Live entertainment includes the sensational Japanese drumming ensemble Wadaiko Rindo, a martial arts demonstrations and demonstration of traditional rice-cake making or "mochi-tsuki" by the Embassy of Japan. You and your family can sample some of the handmade mochi at the Embassy's tent.
