Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing are located in two industrial suburbs of Canberra - Hume in the south and Mitchell in the north. Both centres are housed in large warehouses with over 7 metres of floor to ceiling climbing walls and large boulder climbing areas. Whilst there you can climb a variety of rock paths, do a class, test your skills and increase in levels and difficulty. Kids can also climb and there is a party area near the boulder climbing area in Hume, with a soft mat underneath in case they fall.
Tucked a little out the way, the Hume centre is an impressive (and intimidating!) sight as you walk in. The sheer scale of the training walls show it is serious place to test your skills and gain enormous strength. If you are after a new sport, a different way to strength train or want to learn a new skill, Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing is a good place to start. With an adrenaline rush and a sense of achievement when you reach the top, it is an exercise you can enjoy with friends all year around.
If you have never tried it before, the staff will explain the details and ask you to sign an indemnity form, then give you a short lesson on how to belay with the ropes. You will need to come with a friend, or a group of friends, who will be at the bottom belaying you as you climb, then vice versa. The staff are always available if you have questions and they also have a desk at the bottom of the main climbing area to supervise.
Although there are kids prices for children under 6, there is no specific children's area. Kids of all ages are welcome to pick a spot on any wall and start climbing. There is a small unharnessed area upstairs with rock climbing mounds closer together which would make a great starting point for kids - and adults.

There is also a party area on this level, near the boulder climbing training area. Party prices are $17 per person including harness hire and all necessary training and safety instructions. You can take your own party fare and energy food, with microwaves and a BBQ to utilise. This is a great spot for primary school aged children and high schoolers to have parties, where they can challenge their mates and have fun at the same time. Staff members suggest a quiet time to have the party here as the boulder climbing area will still be open to the public during the party time. See here for more details.

There are a range of pricing options including Mums and Bubs deals, Kids Club, Ladies Night and Squad membership. See here for pricing details. If you would like to join a Squad there is the Rock Rats ( for kids under 10), Gecko's and Link Squad ( for ages 10-18) and the Elite Squad, for adults who have mastered the centre. See here for Squad information.
For an exercise class that is a little different, why not try out the Aerial Silk classes at Mitchell (known as North Rocks) and Pole and Lycra Hoop classes at Hume (South Rocks). Both of these classes look graceful and artistic, as well as being an incredible workout. These are two great options if you are looking for an indoor exercise class during the colder months, but don't wish to join a gym. See here for details.
Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing centres are an ideal location for those wishing to try something new or expand on fitness levels. With the colder weather almost upon us, it can also be a great time to try a new indoor sport, with the centres open until 10pm on weeknights and 8pm on weekends. On my visit to try it out, I watched two 12 year old girls fearlessly make their way up the 7.5m rock walls, enjoying every minute. It is a safe and great form of exercise for all ages utilising strength, balance, flexibility and problem solving.
Why don't you get a group together and give it a try this weekend?
...and see who can get to the top in the best time!
