Every year, dozens of enormous hot air balloons gather on the lawns in front of Old Parliament House and somehow manage to coordinate laying out the balloons, inflating them, and taking off - all while negotiating around enormous crowds.
Every year balloon crews register from all around the world - as far as Albuquerque this year. Novelty balloons are always popular - this year the best ones were Yoda, an Angry Bird, and the Dodo Internet mascot.
My daughter was two and a half years old in 2014, and the balloon spectacular is her earliest memory. Now it's a family tradition - followed by breakfast at The Pancake Parlour (only if it's a weekday, or it's too crowded).
Hot air balloons are fascinating and magical for all ages. And it's free!
Check the website before leaving home, because some weather conditions will halt the festival.
