Canal Street is one of the most popular New York shopping destinations. It is the major street in Chinatown, and offers the best in New York City street shopping. It is easily accessible by bus, subway, or cab (or even walking if you live in the Tribeca or other close neighborhoods), inviting New York City residents and tourists alike, to flock to Canal Street to haggle, bargain, barter, and just generally get down to some serious shopping business.

What's on Canal Street ?

You name it, you'll find it on Canal Street. Again, this is street vendor shopping so you may walk by a merchant offering electronics, sitting right next to someone selling scarves or t-shirts, who is sitting right next to someone selling designer clothing or accessories. A word of caution is necessary here; most "designer" pieces are "knock-offs", so be warned. Purchase at your own risk.

All that shopping and haggling is going to make you hungry, but don't worry. There are almost as many food vendors as there are merchandise vendors. You can pick up a snack at one of them, or enjoy a quick meal before continuing on to the next vendor to see what other goodies you can snag.

If by some remote possibility you can't find something on Canal Street, remember that this street forms the border between Chinatown and Little Italy. So, after a day of shopping, head on over to Mulberry Street for some good old Italian food, but then come right on back to Canal Street.

What are the hours?

As these are street vendors, their hours, as well as the days in which vendors are available, may vary from those of regular retail stores. Some may open early and close late, while others may open late and close early.

Many of the vendors will have their hours posted, so you can take note of them and plan your shopping day accordingly. If your plan is to return later and purchase something, though, be aware that unless you can convince them to put your selection back for you, it might not be there when you are finally ready to buy.
