A surprisingly awesome & chilled out camping holiday option
Flinders Beach Camping
Flinders Beach Camping

Yep, as your typical mum of three young children, I left it too late to secure our usual digs for Christmas holidays at Lennox Head in Northern New South Wales or Amity Point on Stradbroke Island. Neither had I booked a petsitter in time and my only holiday window was between Christmas and New Year. Google really is your friend. I found a recommendation about dog friendly camping on the beach at North Straddie and VOILA! I had a great solution to the problem.

The drive to Cleveland was fast. We even had time to turn around half way there to go back home because my dear husband forgot his fishing rods. We had great fun on the barge (Big Red Cat). We watched a movie on the big screen in air conditioned comfort and ate yummy treats and drinks from the cafe, while the big cat transported us to island paradise.

The camping areas at the Amity Point end of Flinders Beach are dog off leash areas. This is helpful if your dog doesn't like being tied up or on a lead 100% of the time. We found that it was wise to tie up our very friendly dog overnight or when we were unable to supervise her as it isn't always pleasant for other campers to have an unknown dog loitering around their camp. There were plenty of drop toilets available but if you want a shower you had use of the showers in the nearby caravan park which is also right on the beach at the Point Lookout end.

This is possibly the most family friendly holiday we have had to date, when you take into consideration the needs of every family member. My husband could fish at his leisure. My kids quickly found a posse of friends to play with, within our sight and there were genuine tears of grief when we had to say goodbye, but addresses swapped with new-found pen pals. And most importantly I got the time to actually read a book from cover to cover and just relax. Something I haven't been able to do since pre-kid days. Just utter bliss. Highly recommended family holiday.
